PIX for crypto: how Brazil's instant payment system changed onboarding
PIX moves $30B+ per day in Brazil. For crypto, it eliminates the friction that defined fiat onboarding for a decade. Here is how it works and why it matters globally.

What PIX is
PIX is Brazil's instant payment system, launched by the Banco Central in November 2020. It moves money between bank accounts in seconds, 24/7, for free. The user identifies the destination via a "key" (CPF, email, phone, or random ID).
By 2026, PIX handles over 200 million transactions per day. It is the dominant payment rail in Brazil for consumer and business payments alike, far surpassing card networks.
Internationally, PIX is one of the most successful instant payment systems. Brazilian regulators export the design (India's UPI is similar; Mexico's CoDi was inspired). Every major economy is building or has built its equivalent.
Why this matters for crypto
Before PIX, depositing BRL into a crypto exchange involved bank wire transfers (TED) with delays (sometimes hours, sometimes 1-2 business days) and fees ($1-3 per transfer).
With PIX, the deposit is instant and free. The friction that prevented many Brazilians from trying crypto disappeared. Exchange signup-to-first-trade time dropped from hours/days to minutes.
Combined with KYC automation, the onboarding flow is now: signup → KYC (10 minutes) → PIX deposit (instant) → trade. The same flow in the US or Europe involves multiple days and ACH/SEPA delays.
How PIX deposits work on exchanges
The exchange shows a PIX key (often a random UUID) and an expected amount. The user opens their banking app, enters the key and amount, confirms, and the funds arrive at the exchange's PIX-receiving account in seconds.
The exchange's back-office identifies the deposit via the reference code (or by matching amount + bank info), credits the user's BRL balance, and the user can immediately convert to crypto.
Some exchanges use direct PIX integration (real-time API with banks); others use manual reconciliation (admin confirms incoming PIX before crediting). OFFCODE uses manual reconciliation as of mid-2026, with real-time integration planned for Q3.
PIX for withdrawals
Withdrawals work in reverse. User specifies their PIX key (their own CPF, email, etc.). The exchange initiates a PIX-out to that key. Funds arrive in the user's bank in seconds.
Withdrawal limits vary by exchange and KYC tier. Common limits: 5,000 BRL/day for T1, 50,000 BRL/day for T2, 200,000+ BRL/day for T3. PIX-specific regulatory limits (typically R$200k for individuals) cap the overall ceiling.
Free withdrawal is standard. Some exchanges charge a small fee (R$1-2) but the market has commoditized this.
PIX vs international rails
ACH (US): 1-3 business day settlement. Free for most users but the delay is meaningful. Same-day ACH exists but isn't universally adopted.
FedNow (US): the US instant payment system launched 2023. Slower adoption than PIX; many banks still not integrated.
SEPA (EU): 1-2 business day standard, SEPA Instant in seconds. Instant version is now widely available across the EU.
Wire transfers globally: same-day if you initiate before cutoff; 1-3 days otherwise. High fees ($15-50 per wire).
PIX is the most ergonomic of these. Free, instant, ubiquitous. The Brazilian Central Bank made an excellent infrastructure decision.
Risks of PIX in crypto
Scams targeting PIX users have proliferated. "Investment guarantees" that promise high returns and ask for PIX deposits are usually exit scams. Treat any PIX request from an unverified source as suspicious.
Wrong destination keys are not recoverable. If you PIX to the wrong address, you have minimal recourse. Double-check before confirming.
Tax tracking. Receita Federal sees every PIX transaction. Tax obligations on crypto purchases via PIX are clear; don't omit them in your IR declaration.
What OFFCODE does with PIX
Deposit flow: user generates a unique PIX intent with reference code, transfers from any Brazilian bank, our team confirms within minutes (or seconds in normal hours).
Withdrawal flow: PIX-out to user's verified PIX key. T1 users have R$5k/day cap; T2 has R$50k. Free of charge.
Direct PIX API integration (real-time deposit confirmation) is planned. Users will see balance updates in seconds rather than minutes.
Bottom line
PIX is one of the underrated reasons crypto adoption in Brazil has run ahead of other regions. The onboarding friction is genuinely lower than in the US or Europe.
If you're a Brazilian crypto user, PIX is your default. If you're outside Brazil, watch your country's instant payment infrastructure. The next decade of crypto onboarding will be defined by these rails.
