Because there is no expiry to anchor the contract to the underlying, perpetuals rely on a different mechanism to keep their price tethered to the spot market: the funding rate. On a centralized venue, you deposit funds into an account the platform controls, and an internal ledger tracks who owns what. You are trusting that operator to remain solvent, to process withdrawals, and to honor your balance. On a decentralized exchange (DEX), the model inverts: trades settle against on-chain infrastructure, and the architecture is built around self-custody rather than handing your keys to an intermediary.
The practical consequence is transparency and control. Positions, collateral, and settlement live in a verifiable environment rather than inside a closed database you cannot inspect. For a perpetuals trader, that means the rules of margin and liquidation are enforced by code and on-chain state rather than by an opaque back office.

Contrast this with coin-margined contracts, where you post the volatile asset itself (say, BTC) as collateral. In a coin-margined position, a falling market hurts you twice: the position loses value and the collateral backing it loses value at the same time, accelerating the path to liquidation. This is a non-linear, and often surprising, risk.
USDC margin removes that second-order effect. Because your collateral is denominated in a dollar-stable unit, the value of what backs your position does not swing with the market. Your profit and loss is measured cleanly in dollars, which makes position sizing, risk limits, and mental accounting dramatically simpler, especially for newer traders who are still building intuition for leverage.
Leverage and Liquidation: The Mechanics You Must Respect

For a trader, funding is both a cost and a signal. If you hold a long while funding is strongly positive, you are paying to keep that position open, which matters for longer holds. Persistently extreme funding can also flag a crowded trade that is vulnerable to a sharp reversal. Reading funding is part of trading perpetuals competently, not an afterthought.

Perpetual futures are powerful but unforgiving instruments. The single most common way traders lose money is not picking the wrong direction, it is sizing positions so aggressively that normal volatility liquidates them before their thesis has a chance to play out. Position sizing is risk management; leverage selection is risk management; everything else is secondary.
Build a few habits early. Decide your maximum loss per trade before entering. Use stop levels so a single bad move cannot cascade. Keep a buffer of free margin rather than deploying every dollar of collateral. And monitor funding on positions you intend to hold, because the slow drip of funding can quietly erode an otherwise correct trade.
