Recap: o que foi Terra Luna

Terra Luna era ecosystem operated by Terraform Labs, fundada por Do Kwon. Two principal tokens: LUNA (governance + reserve) e UST (algorithmic stablecoin pegged to $1 via mint/burn mecanismo com LUNA).

Em pico (abril 2022), LUNA market cap ~$40 billion, UST market cap ~$18 billion. Tinha Anchor Protocol pagando 20% APY em UST — main driver of UST adoption.

Maio 2022: o colapso

Em 7-8 maio 2022, UST started to lose peg. Mass redemptions triggered LUNA hyperinflation (LUNA supply went from 350M tokens a 6,5 trillion em days as algorithm minted LUNA to absorb UST burning).

Em 12 maio 2022, UST stable at $0,07. LUNA at $0,00001 (essentially zero). Combined ~$40 billion in value destroyed em 5 dias. Estimated 1+ million investors affected globally.

Do Kwon's flight

Do Kwon left Korea em abril 2022 (before collapse) and traveled to Singapore. After collapse, he became target of South Korean prosecutors.

Interpol Red Notice issued setembro 2022. Do Kwon refused to surrender, allegedly remained em Serbia.

Em março 2023, Do Kwon arrested em Montenegro using forged Costa Rican passport. Sentenced em Montenegro to 4 months prison for document forgery (separate from main crypto charges).

Extradition battle

Both US (Southern District of New York, SDNY) e South Korea sought extradition. SDNY indictment alleged conspiracy, wire fraud, commodities fraud, securities fraud — 8 counts total.

Montenegrin courts ruled on extradition em 2024-2025. Decision: Do Kwon extradited to United States em December 2024 (US prosecutorial priority).

Subsequent fight: Do Kwon's lawyers argued for South Korean trial first (potentially lighter sentence). US prevailed.

US trial 2025-2026

Trial began em SDNY em outubro 2025. Prosecution argued Do Kwon misled investors about UST/LUNA stability mechanism, specifically about reserve assets backing UST.

Key evidence: internal Slack messages showing Do Kwon knew UST stability was at risk months before collapse, but publicly continued to assert solidness.

Em janeiro 2026, Do Kwon convicted on 5 of 8 counts. Sentencing scheduled May 2026.

Em 7 May 2026, Do Kwon sentenced to 22 years federal prison. Restitution order: $4,3 billion (to be distributed to identified victims through bankruptcy estate of Terraform Labs).

South Korean parallel proceedings

South Korea filed charges in absentia em outubro 2022. Despite US extradition outcome, South Korea continues civil proceedings. Estimated total claims em Korean courts: $1+ billion from Korean retail investors.

Do Kwon's wife and other Terraform Labs associates (Hyun-Hong Shin, Daniel Hong) face Korean charges. Some have surrendered, some remain at large.

Industry implications

Im 2026, 'algorithmic stablecoin' is universally regarded as broken design (unless heavily over-collateralized). MakerDAO/Sky uses crypto collateral 1,5x. Ethena USDe uses delta-neutral hedging (not pure algorithmic). Pure algorithmic stables similar to UST are not deployed at scale post-2022.

Regulatory: GENIUS Act (US, 2024) requires 1:1 cash + treasury reserve backing for stablecoins. EU MiCA same requirement. Effectively bans pure algorithmic models.

Founder accountability: Do Kwon sentence (22 years) becomes precedent for crypto fraud prosecution. Compared to SBF (25 years) and Mashinsky (Celsius founder, sentenced 2025).

Lessons learned

Lesson 1: algorithmic stability mechanisms are inherently fragile. Pegging via mint/burn requires reflexive bullish sentiment. When sentiment breaks, death spiral.

Lesson 2: 20% APY without backing is impossible to sustain. Anchor Protocol's yield was paid from VC subsidies and Terra reserves — not from organic yield. Unsustainable by construction.

Lesson 3: founder accountability has improved post-2022. SBF, Mashinsky, Do Kwon all face decades em prison. Industry stigma against fraud has strengthened.

Aviso YMYL: 'high yield' continues to be marketed across cripto products. Each one requires same scrutiny. Where does yield come from? Sustainable mechanism? Disclosed risk? If answers are vague, treat as red flag.
