$31B in RWAs Onchain, But Under 10% Works in DeFi

DWF Labs says $31B in real-world assets sit onchain, yet under 10% are active in DeFi. Here's why the liquidity gap matters for traders.

Most tokenized assets are idle, not traded

DWF Labs reports that more than $31 billion in real-world assets (RWAs) have moved onchain, but less than 10% of that capital is actually active inside DeFi. In other words, the tokens exist on a ledger, yet the vast majority just sit there — not lent, not used as collateral, not traded. The firm argues that the next phase of tokenization will be won by platforms that turn these dormant assets into liquid, usable instruments.

Issuance was the easy part. Getting Treasuries, credit, and other assets to behave like productive onchain capital is the real bottleneck, and names like BlackRock, Maple, and Figure are now competing to unlock that utility.

Why the liquidity gap exists

Tokenizing an asset and making it tradable are two different problems. A token without deep order books, lending markets, or composability with other protocols is little more than a digital certificate. The $31 billion headline is impressive, but the sub-10% activity rate shows that most RWAs lack the venues and integrations needed to move.

This is a structural opportunity: whoever solves distribution and liquidity for RWAs captures the flow, not just the issuance fees.

What it means for traders

For traders, the signal is that RWA is still early and mostly illiquid — which cuts both ways. Thin liquidity means wider spreads and slippage on most tokenized assets today, so size positions accordingly and watch where real volume actually concentrates. The platforms that succeed at making RWAs tradable are likely where the next wave of yield, collateral options, and new markets will appear.

Practically, focus on liquid, well-integrated venues rather than chasing every newly tokenized asset. On OFFCODE, you can stay positioned in liquid spot and USDC perpetuals while this narrative matures, then rotate as RWA markets gain real depth.
